Life Before Thomas Jefferson High School
I’m born and raised in Colorado and have been a math educator for over 17 years. I began by teaching 8th grade math at Highline Academy here in Denver, helping establish culture and norms in their exemplary middle school. Afterwards, I joined the staff at Denver Green School to help open their new middle school building and taught 7th grade math. Both experiences were so valuable in my career, not only in learning the qwerks of pre-algebraic reasoning, but also in serving the needs of very diverse communities. For a few years after that, I was able to chase my dream of teaching high school and lead Algebra & Geometry classes at Eaglecrest High School in Centennial, Colorado. This is my fourth year here at TJ and I’ve really enjoyed returning to the communities I love serving in Denver.
I have a large family including my daughter who is beginning her college career this year, a sophomore son here at TJ, a 7th grader, and my youngest son who starts 1st grade this year. My wonderful wife is also an educator, so between our students and our big, loud, blended family, we stay pretty busy outside of school. When I’m not teaching or driving kids to their various activities, I enjoy distance running. One of these years, I hope to re-qualify for the Boston Marathon and continually grow as a runner.
